Goethe-Institut Ukraine and NGO Feminist Workshop are looking for illustrators and artists to participate in the “Her Gaze” project within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
“Her Gaze” aims to gather and make visible in an artistic way the experiences of women in wartime and to strengthen an acknowledge of the artists about the ethical and safe methods of working with archives and personal stories of people, who have gone through traumatic experiences in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine. One of the aims of the project is to establish a feminist creative network involving German, Ukrainian and Polish artists and activists. The project consists of two parts: an international online laboratory and a summer offline residency for young emerging artists from Ukraine.
We invite illustrators and artists from Ukraine, Germany, and Poland who work on topics of gender equality and feminism, who are interested in implementing socially relevant projects as well as international cooperation, and who are ready to work with the topic of war and to participate in the online laboratory. The 10 project participants selected as a result of the open call will work with materials from the archives of partner organizations and will also receive recommendations for independent work with personal stories. The illustrations based on the archival research will be collected in a collective zine and presented at exhibitions in Lviv and Berlin in November 2023, along with the results of the summer residency program for young Ukrainian artists, which will be held separately. The summer program includes a practical curriculum with the support of experienced artists, curators, and researchers, including participants of the online residency.
The collaboration will last for 5 months and will include mandatory joint synchronization meetings at least once a month. The project participants will be offered various forms of group and individual work, mentoring support, and lectures from invited experts. In addition, there will be a two-day offline networking event for all project participants in Berlin.
Requirements for participation:
– availability of a professional portfolio
– awareness and high interest in gender equality and feminism
– B2 level of English language proficiency (English will be the working language of the project)
– willingness to participate in monthly online networking sessions (June-October 2023, 5 sessions in total)
– willingness to participate in the final networking event in Berlin in November 2023
What we offer:
– a one-time scholarship of 550 euros
– coverage of all production costs related to the preparation for the exhibitions and the publication
– coverage of all expenses for the trip to Berlin in November 2023
