Last Saturday, we gathered at the FemWorkshop space with art critic Oleksandra Kushchenko to learn about the status of women in Ukrainian visual art and about this year’s Taras Shevchenko Prize laureate — Zhanna Kadyrova.
It all started with a question: “Who, in your opinion, is the most famous Ukrainian woman artist?” It was encouraging to hear that the audience was engaged with the topic — several names were mentioned, including the answer: Mariia Prymachenko. Of course, the lecture did not focus solely on the globally recognized naïve art of Prymachenko, but in the context of exploring gender imbalance in art, it was important to mention her and other Ukrainian women artists, such as Tetiana Yablonska.
We had already written a little about Zhanna Kadyrova, but believe us — it’s hard to fit the story of this artist into a single post or event. That’s why we invite you to keep learning more about her, whether or not you attended the event. A good place to start is her personal website. You might even have seen her work in person — in the hall of the Railway Station or at various exhibitions. Feel free to share your impressions in the comments!
