NGO “Feminist Workshop” has recently organized a lecture for “Workshop of your dream”, the center supporting people with mental disabilities. The board-certified OB/GYN and fertility specialist Liliya Mineralova delivered the lecture.
Among our participants were people with mental disabilities of groups II and III, people of different ages and with different diagnoses, such as autism, Down syndrome, and developmental cognitive disabilities. They learned about the components of personal hygiene, including intimate hygiene, male and women’s bodies and the differences between them, got to know how to deal with menstruation and why wet dreams are not something to be ashamed of.
In the words of Doctor Lilya, “My lecture is precisely about love, about taking care of yourself and your well-being.”
The ending of the meeting was especially nice: participants and workers of the center gifted Lilya a box of colored socks with 47 chromosomes signifying visibility and support of people with Down syndrome, and a hand-made honeycomb candle to create a cozy atmosphere. As evidenced by Doctor Lilya it can also be used as a pointer.
At the lecture, the participants learned about their bodies and personal hygiene and felt supported and understood in their needs. This, in turn, helps to create a more inclusive and empathetic society, where everyone can unlock their potential and become a full-fledged member of the community.
