Not long ago, we hosted a warm and insightful gathering — “Feminism for Beginners”. This event was designed for those who are just beginning to explore feminism or who want to learn more in a cozy, welcoming environment.
We talked about inventions made by women — ones most of us had never even heard of. We learned about the Matilda effect and how often women’s contributions were silenced or credited to men.
Not only that, but we discussed the rights that feminists of the past fought for and at what cost. We also talked about who today’s feminists are, what they are working on, and what the feminist movement looks like today.
Together, we reflected on whether feminism is still needed now, and what happens in countries where women’s rights are not protected.
We also touched on repression in the U.S., such as the removal of information about women’s achievements from NASA websites, bans, and attempts to silence feminist voices.
At the end, we shared a selection of films and favorite feminist blogs — for those who want to explore the topic more deeply.
And now, our favorite part — the Myth-Busting Session!
Do feminists shave their legs? Can they get married? Do they get “beauty injections”? Does everyone have to be strong and independent? And dozens more questions that (we know!) you’ve been wanting to ask but maybe felt awkward about. Here, we talked honestly, with humor, and without judgment.
